The Color Spread with O-Tama is Too Cute!
Chapter 1166 opened with a gorgeous color spread! The illustration shows Yamato and O-Tama gathering fallen leaves around a campfire. They’re enjoying roasted sweet potatoes with foxes and tanuki, and the scene is absolutely heartwarming. O-Tama’s smile is so adorable!
Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, and Chopper are also depicted in the forest enjoying the autumn treats together with Yamato, O-Tama, and Shinobu (along with ninja foxes and tanuki). It’s a peaceful scene that shows the calm moments after the Wano arc. This beautiful seasonal color spread warms the reader’s heart.
The God Valley Incident Concludes! Garling Delivers the Final Blow to Rocks
In the previous chapter 1165, Rocks took massive damage from the ultimate collaboration attack between Roger and Garp. However, incredibly, Rocks was still alive! He tried to say something: “Survive… this island…!! Ah, no good. Hey Roger, Garp, run… you guys won’t… die.”
To still maintain consciousness after taking simultaneous attacks from Roger and Garp, both at full power with their Conqueror’s Haki – this truly shows why Rocks D. Xebec was known as the world’s strongest pirate. But then, three figures from the Holy Knights appeared: Figarland Garling, Shepherd Ju Peter, and Topman Warcury.
Garling stabbed Rocks with his sword, marking the end of Rocks D. Xebec. The fact that it was Garling who delivered the final blow to the fallen Rocks is extremely significant. It wasn’t Roger and Garp who finished him off, but ultimately someone from the World Government side who ended his life.
Rocks’ final words were: “Oh right, I forgot to say… thanks for stopping my rampage.” These words revealed gratitude for being stopped from his devil-transformed state, showing a surprisingly human side of Rocks, who had been portrayed as a ruthless pirate.
This is How God Valley Was Erased
After the destruction of the Rocks Pirates, God Valley island itself began sinking into the sea. Unlike Lulusia Kingdom which was spectacularly destroyed by an ancient weapon, this was a quiet sinking. The collision between the world’s strongest Haki users – Roger, Garp, and Rocks – likely destroyed the island’s foundation, triggering the sinking.
Imu, possessing Saturn’s body, had ordered the “erasure” of God Valley. God Valley, an inconvenient location for the World Government, was thus completely erased from history. As a base of the D clan and a threat to the Celestial Dragons, all evidence needed to be thoroughly destroyed.
The Newspapers Were Altered – Birth of the Hero Garp
The newspaper reports were falsified, stating only “Rocks Pirates Destroyed, Hero Garp.” Roger’s name wasn’t mentioned at all. As suspected, the existence of the Five Elders and the Holy Knights, as well as the God Valley Incident itself, were covered up. History was rewritten to suit the World Government’s convenience. This is the “alteration of history” that has been repeated throughout the ONE PIECE world.
The contrast between Garp, who was dissatisfied with this, and Sengoku, who turned a blind eye, is depicted. Being a man of strong justice, Garp cannot accept the concealment of truth. Sengoku, on the other hand, seems to understand the reality that to survive within the World Government organization, one must sometimes turn away from the truth.
Garp was elevated to “hero” status because of this incident, but it must have been a complicated title for him. As someone who knows the truth, he would have to live carrying false glory.
Rayleigh and Shakky Are Together!
After the God Valley Incident, Rayleigh and Shakky are shown together. Shakky was a former member of the Rocks Pirates, but through this incident, we can see that their relationship deepened. This marks the beginning of the relationship between the two who would later run “Shakky’s Rip-off Bar” in Sabaody Archipelago.
As news of the Rocks Pirates’ dissolution spread worldwide, reactions from key members like Newgate (Whitebeard), Linlin (Big Mom), and Kaido were also depicted. These incidents would become the catalyst for each of them to begin their own paths.
Shanks Appears from Roger’s Treasure Chest! Same Development as Uta!
One of this week’s biggest highlights was the scene where Roger discovers baby Shanks inside a treasure chest! Shanks is shown laughing inside the chest. This scene is exactly the same as what was depicted in the storyboard for the movie “ONE PIECE FILM RED” – the same development as Uta!
The fact that Shanks was found at God Valley suggests some connection to the Figarland family. The blood relationship between Garling and Shanks, and why Shanks was in that treasure chest – many mysteries remain, but we can expect more details to be revealed in future developments.
The development of Roger discovering a baby in a stolen treasure chest is truly fateful. This Shanks would later become one of the Four Emperors and entrust the straw hat to Luffy. History works in mysterious ways.
King Harald’s Confusion and Rampage
Upon learning of Rocks’ defeat, Harald becomes confused and violent. He seems to be regretting his own helplessness. The guilt of being unable to save Rocks, and the sadness of losing a friend, drove him to madness.
Loki apparently thought Rocks was the god Nika, but Rocks himself told him that he was “not a god, but a pirate trying to rule the world.” It must have been a huge shock for Loki. Still, he would come to admire Rocks and inherit the dream of “becoming King of the World.”
After news of the Rocks Pirates’ dissolution was reported, Harald cracked down on giants who were attacking human towns. He tried to fulfill his responsibility as king to bring order to the confused giant race.
Dragon’s Imprisonment and the Beginning of the Revolutionary Army
Dragon is captured and imprisoned. However, Garp gives his son the key to the prison cell. Is this where the Revolutionary Army begins? Dragon despises Garp for remaining in the Navy despite knowing about the World Government.
The difference in their views on justice became decisive here. Garp tried to pursue justice within the Navy organization, but Dragon believed that true justice could not be achieved without reforming the World Government itself.
This difference in ideology would lead Dragon to become the leader of the Revolutionary Army. Garp’s act of giving Dragon the key may have been filled with complex feelings not as “a Marine” but as “a father.” Understanding his son’s beliefs while choosing to remain in the Navy himself – this parent-child conflict would greatly influence the ONE PIECE world going forward.
King Harald’s Decision and Imu’s Ominous Eyes
Finally, Harald goes to Marine Headquarters in Marineford of his own accord. Standing before the World Government and Navy, he tears off his own horns – the symbol of the ancient giant race – and declares with his bloodied face: “Please give me a chance to atone for the giants’ 1000 years of sins. I’ll be anything, even a slave.” The sight of Harald apologizing with his blood-stained face was truly painful to watch.
Filled with guilt for being unable to help the giants, Harald decided to integrate Elbaf into the world community. His decision was meant to protect the future of the giant race, but it also meant being placed under the World Government’s control.
And finally, the chapter ends with a depiction of Imu’s eyes. What does this ominous eye depiction mean? Will Harald fall into Imu’s hands and be used as a devil? Or is this a hint that Elbaf itself is under the World Government’s surveillance and destined to be erased someday?
There’s no doubt that Imu was watching Harald’s actions. Despite pledging loyalty by breaking off his horns, Harald may be nothing more than a useful pawn to Imu. The most frightening possibility is that Elbaf might meet the same fate as Lulusia Kingdom.
Expectations and Theories for Future Developments
Chapter 1166 marked both the conclusion of the God Valley Incident and the beginning of a new story. Rocks’ death, Shanks’ discovery, Dragon’s departure from the Navy, and Harald’s decision – all of these are crucial turning points that shape the current ONE PIECE world.
What’s particularly intriguing is the relationship between Harald and Imu. Despite Harald pledging loyalty by breaking off his horns to the World Government, the final depiction of Imu’s eyes creates an ominous atmosphere. Perhaps Harald will be turned into a devil by Imu and used as a pawn to control Elbaf. If so, this would connect to Loki’s current situation.
Loki is currently chained up supposedly for killing his father Harald. But what if Harald had been turned into a devil? Perhaps Loki inherited Rocks’ dream of “becoming King of the World” and fought to save his father. The truth will be revealed in future chapters.
It’s also significant that this God Valley Incident was the catalyst for Dragon to establish the Revolutionary Army. Having witnessed the darkness of the World Government and clarified his ideological differences with his father Garp, Dragon’s path to revolution began here.
The fact that Shanks was found at God Valley is also a major foreshadowing in the story. His relationship with the Figarland family, and why he was in that treasure chest – Shanks’ birth secret will likely hold great significance in the final saga.
Conclusion
ONE PIECE Chapter 1166 “A New Story” was a crucial chapter depicting the conclusion of the God Valley Incident and the dawn of a new era that began from it. Rocks receiving the final blow from Garling, Shanks discovered in a treasure chest, Dragon beginning his path to revolution, and Harald kneeling before the World Government – all important events connecting to the current ONE PIECE world.
From the cuteness of O-Tama in the color spread to the heavy historical developments, this week’s issue was packed with highlights. Especially the final depiction of Imu’s eyes foreshadows ominous developments to come. The anticipation for future chapters just keeps growing!
With the flashback arc concluded for now, will we return to the present timeline next chapter? I can’t wait for Luffy’s confrontation with Loki and the revelation of Elbaf’s truth.
