Detective Conan Vol. 108 Review – Rum’s Showdown with the FBI and a Tense Three-Way Brain Battle!

Hello everyone, this is Kou! Today I’m bringing you my review of the long-awaited Detective Conan Volume 108, which I just finished reading.

To be honest, I’m a relative newcomer to the Conan universe – I only really started diving in from Volume 107. But since then, I’ve watched the film The One-Eyed Flashback (Sekigan no Zanzō) five times at Tachikawa Cinema City, caught Black Iron Submarine on Amazon Prime, and just saw this year’s theatrical release Highway Fallen Angel. So my Conan knowledge is gradually leveling up!

And let me tell you, Volume 108 was an absolute thrill ride. Black Organization’s No.2 “Rum” is at the center of the action, the FBI is closing in, and Conan finds himself entangled in a tense three-way mind game. Even as a relative novice, I was completely hooked. Let’s dive in!

Meanwhile, Ran, Sonoko, Sera, and Conan visit a hotel for a meal, where a single photograph triggers an unexpected chain reaction. And at a hot spring, the “Wind Goddess” Hagiwara Chihaya finds herself caught up in another incident, her thoughts drifting back to two unforgettable people…

This volume is a must-read for fans of the Black Organization arc, and it also features Hagiwara Chihaya, a key figure in the latest film Highway Fallen Angel. A whirlwind of a story from start to finish!

A Quick Detour: Watching Highway Fallen Angel at Cinema City’s “Gokuon 02”

Before diving into the manga, let me share a little about the film experience. I watched Detective Conan: Highway Fallen Angel at Tachikawa Cinema City – my go-to theater. For me, watching a movie pretty much means watching it at Cinema City. This time, I caught it in Studio a’s “Gokuon 02” (Extreme Sound 02) screening, and it was absolutely incredible.

If you want to truly feel motorcycle engine sounds in your bones, this is the only place. The deep bass that vibrates through your gut, the sense of speed cutting through the air – it’s a level of immersion that goes beyond just watching a movie. And Chihaya’s voice in those intense moments – pure ecstasy. Thank you, Jugo. Cinema City is the best. Truly the best.

Also, since The One-Eyed Flashback just dropped on Amazon Prime, I rewatched it yesterday. As the very first Conan film I ever saw, it holds a special place in my heart. Moroboshi Kogoro’s voice never gets old – I could eat rice to it. The full-scale police mobilization, the tense atmosphere, the coolness of P3… it’s all incredible.

Volume 108 – My Thoughts (Spoilers Ahead)

⚠️ Warning: Spoilers for Volume 108 from here on. Proceed with caution if you haven’t read it yet!

Two Murders in the Same Apartment Building – A Wild Setup

The first thing that struck me was the highly unusual situation of two cases happening in the same apartment building. On top of that, Conan’s group, Rum, and the FBI all converge at the scene. The tension was off the charts.

This made me start wondering – is the Conan saga finally approaching its endgame? As a newcomer, my imagination was running wild. The atmosphere felt that significant.

The Hostess and Host Club Case – A Battle of Wits

The first case revolved around the world of hostesses and hosts, and without giving too much away, my main takeaway was: “Wow, that line of work is rough.” But honestly, anyone who can devise tricks like that has got to be sharp.

And then to have Conan, FBI Agent Andre Camel, and Rum all working to crack it from their own angles… brilliant. Each of them is razor-sharp, subtly probing each other while still managing the case at hand. Haibara had an excellent moment too. And Conan’s homeroom assistant teacher – just who are they?!

The Gaming Industry Case and Rum’s Escape

The second case involved people from the gaming world. Once again, even with Rum offering hints, it’s Conan who solves the puzzle. Rum really lives up to his title as No.2 – a formidable opponent through and through. Reading these scenes, you can feel the tension simmering beneath the surface.

And the moment the case wraps up, Rum stages a dramatic accident and escapes. This is where the real highlight begins.

FBI vs Black Organization – A Heart-Pounding Showdown

The Black Organization pieces together their memories and launches a strike against the FBI. The FBI, in turn, prepares countermeasures. The back-and-forth that follows is a dazzling showcase of strategic thinking from both sides – I was genuinely sweating while reading.

Of course, there’s no clean resolution here, but that’s the point. The Black Organization has now obtained new intel, and they’re surely gearing up for their next move. The anticipation is killing me.

With Public Security’s Zero, the FBI, and the Black Organization now locked in a three-way intellectual standoff, even a Conan novice like me can tell that what’s coming next is going to be huge.

Based on Rum’s remarks, the effects of that drug (APTX 4869) still seem somewhat unclear even to the Organization itself. Currently, they’ve confirmed two outcomes: it either ends a person’s life, or it turns them back into a child. Limited, but tantalizing knowledge.

And then – “Wait, who is Mary Akai?!” – cried this naive newcomer. I’ll have to research that one later.

The Hotel “High Tea” Case and the Photograph That Changed Everything

The next setting is a hotel, where Ran, Sonoko, and Sera enjoy “high tea.”

Quick fun fact I learned from this volume: afternoon tea is served at low tables, while high tea is served at higher dining tables, similar to dinner. I had no idea! Always nice to learn something new from manga.

The case in this chapter involves a victim leaving behind a dying message, which Sera and Conan decipher beautifully. Sera’s deductive skills are seriously impressive – clearly she’s inherited the family talent. Honestly, everyone in Conan is too smart. What is going on inside Gosho Aoyama’s brain?!

The pivotal element here is a photograph that becomes evidence. By sheer chance, Mary Akai is captured in the background, and once that photo becomes public, Rum confirms that she’s still alive. A completely unrelated case ends up triggering a major shift in the larger storyline. The way these gears mesh is just beautiful storytelling.

Hot Spring Reunion! Chihaya and Jugo Return!

And then comes the hot spring arc. Chihaya and Jugo are back! I was over the moon!

Since I hadn’t seen them since the film, I thought, “Yes! Another sweet moment between these two!” But then – wait, Kogoro, Ran, and Conan are also at the same hot spring? Why is everyone gathering at the same onsen?! That alone is practically a case in itself.

And sure enough, four women who were all in the same high school table tennis club end up at the center of the volume’s next case. Reading along, my reaction was basically: “Yeah, of course something happens.” In the world of Conan, even hot spring trips lead to murder mysteries. That’s just how it is.

Will we ever get a relaxed, slice-of-life chapter where Chihaya and Jugo just enjoy the inn together?! Also – please put Chihaya’s mud face pack on the market. I’m begging.

Final Thoughts – A Deeply Satisfying Volume

And with that, I finished Volume 108!

This was such a satisfying read – the high-stakes battle with the Black Organization plus the return of Chihaya and Jugo made for an unforgettable experience. The three-way mind game is only going to escalate from here, and with Mary Akai’s existence now confirmed, the story feels poised to make a major leap forward.

Volume 109 is reportedly coming out around autumn this year, so I’ll use the time to keep leveling up my Conan knowledge. Hopefully by then, I’ll be able to appreciate even more of the deep lore.

Honestly, the way Gosho Aoyama constructs these intellectual showdowns is just incredible. If a newcomer like me is this hooked, longtime fans must be having the time of their lives.

Wishing you all a wonderful Conan-filled life! Thanks so much for reading until the end!
