This Week’s Cover Page: Reiju Is Simply Too Cute

Before anything else, I need to talk about the cover page. Reiju is too cute! She has that big-sister elegance and poise, with just a hint of mischief — one illustration and she has the entire fanbase in the palm of her hand.

And then there’s the star of the page: a little duckling who looks exactly like Sanji from “The Ugly Duckling.” …I am SO jealous of that duckling! Snuggled up right next to Reiju? How many millions of people worldwide would trade places in a heartbeat? (Laughs)

The detail that really got me, though, is that the ones getting chewed out are ducks resembling the rest of the Vinsmoke family — father and sons. There’s something deeply satisfying about that. I can vividly picture Reiju scolding them exactly like this in their day-to-day lives, lol. And when you remember how the ugly duckling’s story ends — the unwanted child who one day spreads his wings — layering that fairy tale over Sanji’s life gives this adorable cover a quietly emotional undercurrent. I could write a whole separate post about this one page.

We Open on… Imu’s Squashed Face

Now, the main event. The chapter opens on Imu, cheek still comically deformed from eating Luffy’s punch last chapter. Even the most regal, elegant villain becomes a funny-face machine in Oda-sensei’s hands — behold, a truly versatile character! The sheer impact of seeing the being who has ruled the world from the shadows with their face squashed sideways… it’s priceless.

And honestly? I love this page. The crackle of Conqueror’s Haki and the sheer force of that blow are condensed into this single spread, and it hits with the same rush as scoring the opening goal in a World Cup match. The moment you turn the page, it animates itself inside your head — you can practically hear the stadium roar. Pages that adapt themselves into anime in your brain this effortlessly are the best. Truly the best. ONE PIECE is just the coolest manga on the planet.

New Move: “Stigma”! Attack of the Little Devils

And just as I was basking in the afterglow — Imu strikes back. A brand-new move: “Stigma” (written in Japanese with kanji that literally read like “sword of vengeful demons” — the name alone is dripping with menace).

These shadowy little creatures with devil-like faces — honestly kind of adorable? — come fluttering toward Luffy and Loki and settle onto their wounds. They look like flames, but apparently they’re not hot; they just sting a little. Mascot-level cute on the outside, pure bad omen on the inside. That gap is what makes them so quietly terrifying.

Then comes the follow-up: from Imu’s hand, a massive, razor-sharp blade of a strike lashes out at Loki. It seems the sword extends toward wherever the little devils have latched on. The best comparison I can think of: painting a target with an infrared laser, then firing the beam. Mark first, then execute a precision strike — the concept is straight-up military hardware. The Ruler of the World fights like a weapons system. That’s terrifying.

Loki Crash-Lands — and Gunko’s Ice Starts to Melt

The strike sends Loki flying — all the way to the cube-shaped prison holding Gunko. Luffy, meanwhile, scrambles to evade by tearing off his devil-covered clothes and tossing them, little hitchhikers and all. Act first, think later — classic Luffy problem-solving, and honestly? The correct call. (Laughs)

At Gunko’s location we find Franky, Jinbe, Nami, Usopp, and Brook. And here’s the detail you can’t miss: the ice that refused to budge no matter what anyone tried starts to melt the moment Loki comes crashing in. Coincidence? Or was some condition just fulfilled? Is Loki himself the key, or was it something in that attack? My theory-brain is going to be gnawing on this block of ice all week long.

The Two Wings: Sanji Has Conqueror’s Potential!?

The scene shifts to the crew’s two wings. First up: Zoro. His opponent: Sommers. …I hate Sommers. So I’m skipping him. (Laughs) Zoro will get his moment in a future review, I promise.

Meanwhile, Sanji squares off against Killingham — and here comes the bombshell: Sanji has the potential for Conqueror’s Haki! But Sanji himself seems unsure, questioning whether he truly has the self-awareness of a “king.” Watching the man who spent his life rejecting his own bloodline now wrestle with “the qualities of a king” is exquisite writing — and it resonates beautifully with that duckling on the cover page, doesn’t it?

And above all — both wings, Zoro AND Sanji, wielders of Conqueror’s Haki. That’s hype. That’s beyond hype. Picture those two flanking their captain and tell me the Straw Hats aren’t operating on a completely different level now.

And Then — the Final Page

Now for the main dish. Splashed across the entire final page is the signal that it has begun.

The Pirate “Emperor” Monkey D. Luffy
VS
The Ruler of the World, Saint Imu Nerona

A full-page fight billing, like the title card of a championship bout. Everything this story has built toward flows into this single page, and the goosebumps still haven’t stopped.

“So you’ve shown yourself, Joy Boy,” Imu declares. And Luffy’s reply:

“Quit calling me by all these different names. I’m Luffy — the man who’s gonna be King of the Pirates!”

…Absolute chills. Not Nika. Not Joy Boy. Luffy. The declaration he’s carried since Chapter 1, hurled right in the face of the ruler of the world. As we say in Japan, I could eat three bowls of rice off this page alone.

And next week? LEAD COLOR PAGES!!! Landing this matchup right on the series’ 29th anniversary — the timing could not be hotter. This is heat that evaporates the rainy season, the typhoons, all of it! A shockwave so fierce even the heavens step aside! This is the clash of conquerors! A true battle of gods!!

Who This Chapter Is For

  • Anyone who wants to witness the opening bell of “that fight” in real time
  • Sanji fans (Conqueror’s potential — it finally happened)
  • Anyone who needs a good grin at the Vinsmoke family cover gag
  • Every single reader who has followed the Elbaph arc this far

Honestly, the only label that fits this week is “required reading for every ONE PIECE fan.” Getting to experience this issue in real time is a little piece of history in itself.

Reading Music: Silent Breeze

Thank you so much for reading to the end! Alongside this blog, I run Silent Breeze, a cafe-style relaxation BGM channel on YouTube. It’s centered on the soft, gentle tones of felt piano — perfect background music for reading, studying, or working.

It also happens to be the perfect soundtrack for re-reading the latest chapter with a cup of coffee on Jump day. Come have a listen!

Final Thoughts: Lead Color Pages Next Week!

And that’s my review of ONE PIECE Chapter 1187, “Ringleader.” An adorable cover page, a chilling new technique, both wings blazing with Conqueror’s potential, and a final page that gave me full-body goosebumps. Only Oda-sensei can pack this much into a single chapter.

The battle between the man who would be Pirate King and the ruler of the world has finally begun. I genuinely cannot wait for next week’s lead color pages! See you in the next review!

Oh, and let me say it one more time for the record: I hate Sommers!
